NIST updates construction and disaster investigations

A September advisory meeting reviewed evidence, draft findings and the path toward recommendations.

What was reported

NIST published a construction-safety investigation update on September 28 following its advisory committee meeting on September 23–24. The update covered Champlain Towers South, Hurricane Maria and implementation of recommendations from the Joplin tornado investigation. For Champlain Towers South, discussion included possible recommendation topics such as construction quality, records retention and building inspections. The Hurricane Maria presentation included draft principal findings. NIST subsequently marked the article updated on October 8.

Why it matters

REC&I perspective: this is a useful example of how evidence, findings, recommendations and implementation represent different stages. An investigation update is not itself a newly enacted building requirement. Readers should preserve that distinction when sharing summaries with a project team. The linked meeting materials offer a way to examine what investigators actually presented, while keeping preliminary findings separate from final recommendations or adopted code changes.

Keep in mind

The useful takeaways

  • Some findings and recommendation topics remain preliminary.
  • Investigation updates do not automatically change codes.
